CORUM: Romvlvs Chronograph

Posted by Joe Vangieri on 30th May 2008

What more evocative name could one imagine for a legendary watch than that of ROMVLVS, founder and first ruler of Rome? A legendary watch because, right from its introduction in 1966, it was the first to dare to display the hour numerals on the bezel instead of the dial.

It now ranks as a classic model built on the noblest watchmaking traditions and has become one of the four main pillars of the CORUM collection.
Romvlvs Chronograph is a new development in the Romvlvs line, adding a complication that provides traditional functions and features even more refined finishing details which enhance its classic, stylized and elegant design. Romvlvs Chronograph is also a first in the current collection, since it is the initial chronograph in the Romvlvs line by CORUM.

The excellent finishing of this self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement, chronometer-certified by the COSC, was specifically developed for CORUM in keeping with the highest criteria of fine traditional watchmaking. Its broad 44mm stainless steel case smoothly incorporates the famous “wave-profile” bezel, which requires extremely complex, delicate and accurate machining. In order to ensure that the relief and motif of the Roman numerals engraved on the bezel are both impeccably precise and perfectly finished, CORUM has taken the stamping technique to its ultimate level of sophistication, with over 50 separate
operations required to achieve the desired result.

The upper surface of the bezel is then mirror-polished to create a striking contrast with the satin-brushed esthetic of the Roman numerals.

The specially cut and shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, convex on top and concave below, requires specialized tools in order to manually place it into the bezel. It protects an elegant black or white dial with a vertical guilloché motif, complete with applied hour-markers, a minute circle around the outer flange, luminescent hour and minute hands, a date window surrounded by an applied ornamental fillet at 6 o’clock, as well as second- and minute-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock.
The case plays on the contrasts between satin-brushed and brilliant polishing.

The two chronograph pushers positioned at 2 and 4 o’clock are satin-brushed and streamlined to follow the curve of the case. The generous dimensions of the fluted screw-lock crown facilitate winding and time-setting operations. It even features a miniature sapphire crystal protecting a tiny metallized CORUM key symbol set against a black background. The screw-down case is engraved with the CORUM logo, the name ROMVLVS and a crown of laurels such as those worn by the Caesars of Ancient Rome. Its water resistance to 50 meters (atmospheres) is guaranteed by o-ring joints fitted in grooves specially machined in the caseback and the inner rim of the case.  Romvlvs Chronograph is fitted with either a crocodile leather strap or a steel bracelet featuring alternating brilliant-polished and satin-brushed links, complete with a customized CORUM triple folding clasp in stainless steel.

Romvlvs Chronograph, a royal way of securing time to your wrist.

Chopard: L.U.C XP- LESS IS MORE… AND ELEGANT

Posted by Joe Vangieri on 30th May 2008

Chopard exudes elegance with the ultra-thin L.U.C XP now available in rose gold or white gold with a slate-grey dial, complimenting the L.U.C Haute Horlogerie collection. Accommodating a self-winding movement equipped with two barrels and an almost 70-hour power reserve within an ultra-thin case is no mean feat.

The Chopard Manufacture watchmakers in Fleurier have accomplished this by constructing an off-centred rotor. The designers have also carefully conceived the large-diameter (39.5 mm) case, so as to give it a more streamlined profile with a thin bezel and an extremely fine case band. The result is a model featuring light, dynamic, timeless lines and radiating a supreme sense of balance.

Chopard offers its new L.U.C Ultra Thin watch in two chic versions, 18-carat rose
gold or white gold variations with a slate-grey dial. The new slate-grey shade of the
dial features applied hour-markers and four Arabic numerals which accentuates the
understated elegance of this sophisticated model.

The Dauphine style hands meticulously mark off the hours and minutes, in step with
the precision of the proprietary L.U.C movement. Winner of the 2006 Geneva
Watchmaking Grand Prix in the ultra-thin watch category, the time piece is now a

MERMOD FRERES : “Primo 4” Musical Timepiece

Posted by Joe Vangieri on 28th May 2008

The “Primo 4” musical timepiece from the MERMOD FRERES watchmaking Manufacture is now available on the market.

The legendary brand from Sainte-Croix, MERMOD FRERES, which is now owned by the renowned manufacturer of music boxes and singing birds, REUGE, is currently launching an exceptional timepiece on the market: the Primo 4.

This mechanical watch - which was initially presented as a sneak preview at the 2007 Baselworld trade fair, before being finalized and officially launched at Baselworld 2008 - features an integrated music player and is now available on the market. It has been released as a limited edition series of 50 timepieces produced in each shade of gold, i.e., white, pink and yellow.

The mechanical watch and musical movements equipping the Primo 4 contain no less than a total of 577 components and 34 rubies. The watch movement vibrates at 28,800 v.p.h. and has a power reserve of 40 hours. The musical movement, which took fours years to develop, plays four different melodies that can be customised according to the specific wishes of each client.

The music player is integrated into four separate minidisks positioned on the cardinal points and functions following the principles of a juke-box. Simply press the push-button situated at 8 o’clock to start the player, which turns the disks towards the note comb. This action may be repeated as often as desired.

One of the major challenges of the Primo 4’s creation lay in achieving perfect acoustic quality. Research was thus carried out on the bridges and plates, as well as on the double-lined base of the case that was designed to act as a sound box. The same is true of the double-lined base in sapphire crystal, which required twelve months of development work before it transmitted the sound vibrations flawlessly.

Several patent and licensing applications have been filed for this unique and exceptional piece. The result lives up to all expectations: a watch that is as remarkable as it is original, intended for music lovers and connoisseurs of exceptional timepieces.
