Patek Philippe Ref. 5101P

Posted by Dennis Ramillo on 5th August 2008

Even for the privileged few, a watch as elegant as this Patek Philippe creation deserves special mention. Every facet of its construction - from the colors, the exterior workings, the stylish look, and the complicated inner mechanics - compliments each other to give this watch an aura of beauty and elegance. It offers a glimpse into the softer side of a man. It does so without making a dent on the masculinity of its wearer. Even that alone makes this Patek Philippe timepiece unique among other wristwatches.

This watch has two complications inside it: the tandem mainspring barrels for a power reserve of 10 days, and the tourbillon that rotates about its axis once a minute. It also has a sapphire crystal caseback that shows its innermost windings and turnings; a look into an architectural wonder of tiny pieces working perfectly in sync.

There are only a few wristwatches that can match what this watch can offer to its wearer. It’s one of those watches that requires years to perfect. It’s also one of those that can significantly impact the personality of its wearer, at least from the perspective of others. Patek Philippe did a magnificent job with this piece, and the whole world should rejoice at the birth of such a timepiece.

Count Carlo Felice Trossi’s large gold Patek Philippe timepiece sold at Geneva’s Sotheby’s sale for more than $250,000 than its expected sale price.

The “Trossi Leggenda”, described as “almost certainly unique” by experts, was the star lot among nearly 200 watches.

World’s most expensive watch: The Patek Philippe and ex-owner Count Carlo Felice Trossi. CarloTrossi was a racing driver, pilot and speed boat racer whose motor-racing victories included the 1947 Italian Grand Prix.

“It is a watch of great symbolic and historic importance as it came out in 1932, a turning point which also saw car racing and the emergence of airplanes,” Geoffroy Ader, Sotheby’s head of watches in Geneva said.

“The combination of Patek Philippe and Ferrari make it an exceptional watch,” he said, referring to the Swiss watchmaker and Italian luxury car maker.

“People who can buy these kinds of watches have a quest for the perfect watch. Once they’ve found it, they will go for it with no limit,” Mr Ader said.
